☕️ (R)emote Expresso is global. Remote. Slightly feral. Weekly.

I wrote a message in a community Slack last week. Not a big one. A few sentences about something I'd been thinking about. Took me maybe forty-five seconds to type.
Then I spent the next ten minutes staring at it.
Not because the words were wrong. The words were fine. I didn't know where to put them. This community has channels with specific vibes, unspoken norms about what goes where, a whole culture around how people show up. I've been there long enough to have a feel for it. But "a feel for it" is not the same as knowing the rules - because nobody wrote the rules. They just happened. And now I'm sitting here reverse-engineering them from observation like some kind of anthropologist who accidentally joined a Slack workspace.
I've done this in three different workspaces this month. Three different versions of "normal."
Cool. Cool cool cool.
Last week's Expresso was about the words we don't have - the feelings that exist in every language except the one your team runs on. That was about translation. This is the sneaky cousin of that problem.
Every organization has an unwritten dress code for communication. Not the actual words - the posture behind them. How casual is too casual. How direct is too direct. Whether you lead with the ask or butter them up first. Whether an emoji is friendly or evidence that you're not serious. Whether a period at the end of a short message means you're precise or you're furious.
I did not make up that last one. "Sure." and "Sure" are two different sentences now. We all just agreed to this somehow without a vote.
None of it is documented. All of it is enforced. And the enforcement is so quiet you might not even realize you failed the test. Nobody pulls you aside. You just feel the room get slightly weird. Or you don't feel anything at all, and you never figure out why that one working relationship never quite warmed up.
Fun.
I used to work with a woman from Argentina. She had a Masters in psychology. She was doing the same work as people on our US team - for less money, which was true then and is brutally common now after years of layoffs gutted knowledge work globally.
She told me she'd draft her messages in Spanish first. The real version. The one that sounded like her. Then she'd translate it to English. Then - and this is the part that stuck with me - she'd send it to one of us on the team to check before it went out more broadly.
Three steps. Every message.
She wasn't checking her grammar. Her English was better than most of ours. She was checking whether her version of professional would match our version of professional. Whether the way she'd put something in Buenos Aires would read the way she meant it in Chicago.
That's not a language barrier. That's a culture tax. And she was paying it every single day while the rest of us just typed and hit enter without thinking twice.
Remote work was supposed to be the great equalizer. Work from anywhere. Hire from everywhere. No more commute, no more office politics, just vibes and Wi-Fi.
But the office didn't die. It just went invisible.
The norms, the hierarchies, the unspoken expectations about how a Real Professional communicates - those all survived the move to remote. They just stopped being learnable through proximity. In an office you could watch. You could overhear the register someone used with the VP versus the new hire. You could absorb culture through the walls.
Remote work took away the walls and kept the expectations.
So now everyone is guessing. But some people are guessing from a lot closer to the answer key. If you grew up in the country that set the defaults, if you speak the language the company thinks in, if your version of "professional" just happens to match theirs - you barely notice the rules exist. They feel like common sense.
For everyone else, they feel like a test with no study guide.
I moved my Slack message, by the way. Twice. It's in a channel now. Possibly the right one. I'll find out the way everyone finds out - by whether anyone responds, or whether the silence has a particular shape to it.

The Survival Guide Nobody Gave You
The following orientation document was not included in your onboarding. It should have been. We apologize for the inconvenience and accept no responsibility for what you've already posted.
Section 1.1: Greetings - "Hi" is neutral. "Hey" is casual. "Hey!" is friendly. "Hey." is a threat. Calibrate accordingly. When in doubt, lead with the other person's name and nothing else. This buys you two seconds to figure out the rest.
Section 2.4: Emoji Response Protocol - A single thumbs-up from a peer means acknowledged. A single thumbs-up from your manager means acknowledged. A single thumbs-up from a senior leader means you will never know what it means and you are not authorized to ask.
Section 3.2: The Period Problem - A period at the end of a long message is punctuation. A period at the end of a short message is a mood. "Sure." and "Sure" are two completely different responses. This is not taught anywhere. It is known everywhere.
Section 5.1: Channel Selection - When in doubt, do not post. The wrong channel is worse than no channel. If you post a project question in #random, you will be gently corrected. If you post a meme in #project-updates, you will be remembered forever. There is no chart. There has never been a chart.
Section 6.3: Response Timing - Replying in under 30 seconds looks like you have nothing else to do. Replying after 4 hours looks like you don't care. The acceptable window is somewhere between these two points. It shifts by organization, seniority, and day of week. No, we will not be more specific.
Section 9.0: The Exit Clause - None of the above is written in any handbook, policy document, or onboarding deck you have ever received or ever will receive. You will learn all of it by getting it wrong. Welcome aboard.

This Week's Experiment: The Accent Mark
Leave one fingerprint this week. One word, one phrase, one way of saying something that's actually how you talk - not how the room talks.
Maybe it's a word from your first language. Maybe it's a turn of phrase your workspace would call "too casual" or "too formal" or "too something." Maybe it's just dropping the "Hope you're well!" you never meant in the first place.
You don't have to explain it. You don't have to make it a thing.
Just stop translating that one part. See if anybody notices. See if you like yourself better in the chat.

Word from the Floor
Three words. Three languages. No English equivalent.
Tatemae (Japanese) - your public face. The version of yourself you present because the situation requires it, as distinct from honne, what you actually think. Not lying. Just the agreed-upon performance that keeps things smooth. Every remote worker maintains a tatemae. Most of us just call it "my work personality."
Jeitinho (Brazilian Portuguese) - the creative art of navigating around systems that weren't built for you. Part charm, part improvisation, part refusal to accept that the official path is the only path. Anyone who's ever figured out an unwritten rule by trial and error instead of being told - that's jeitinho.
Fingerspitzengefühl (German) - literally "fingertip feeling." The instinct for doing the right thing in a situation without being told what the right thing is. Not a skill you can teach. More like a muscle you build from getting it wrong enough times that your fingers learn before your brain does. It's the thing that separates "new to this workspace" from "been here long enough to know you don't message the founder directly."
